The payroll tax cut fight that just concluded really sums up the modern Congress. Back in September, Barack Obama proposed a 450 billion dollar jobs bill in hopes of bringing down the stubbornly high unemployment rate. Not surprisingly, Republicans balked at it and mostly killed the entire thing. However, their opposition forced Obama to go on the offensive and fight for his bill by taking it to the people. Coming on the heels of the debt ceiling, the Democrats had finally learned that you can't sit back and expect Republicans to compromise and come to reasonable agreements; you have to fight for everything you're going to get.

As usual, a public figure makes a statement, someone misinterprets it, and then it's reported that the public figure said the misinterpretation. This week, Barack Obama has been accused of claiming he's the best or 4th best president ever. Here is what he actually said on 60 Minutes: “The issue here is not going be a list of accomplishments. As you said yourself, Steve, you know, I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president — with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln — just in terms of what we’ve gotten done in modern history. But, you know, but when it comes to the economy, we’ve got a lot more work to do."
