The 2012 Republican field has rightly been called one of the
weakest groups of contenders ever. The debates have been pathetic so far and the insane things said at the debates have only been rivaled by the terrible reactions from the crowd that have become commonplace. The modern Republican Party has become a delicate balancing act for their politicians because the base of the party supports a lot of extreme positions and insists that their candidates do the same, but any candidate who actually lives up to their expectations comes off as a lunatic to the vast majority of the population. As a result, this election has seen a number of candidates come and go as the standard bearer for the base while Mitt Romney keeps chugging along as the tortoise in the race. In this case however, it's unclear whether the winner will be the tortoise or whichever hare has the burst of energy at the right moment when the primaries begin.
